Innovation for business is an important focus of Eindhoven University of Technology. It is interesting to examine spin-offs which can be the first step from a successful idea to a successful company. This theme will be approached by the department and by GEWIS, based on their own areas of expertise.

Het voortbestaan van de universiteit is daarmee in gevaar. Als het aan het College van Bestuur ligt ondergaat het gehele bachelorcurriculum daarom op korte termijn een stevige metamorfose. Maar wat houdt deze verandering voor studenten, docenten en het onderwijsprogramma in?Rector magnificus prof. dr. ir. Hans van Duijn licht de plannen van het College van Bestuur toe en gaat met het publiek in discussie over de vraag of deze metamorfose wel wenselijk is.

Informatielekken kunnen je helpen met het kraken van chipkaarten of het winnen van Triviant (als je schoonmoeder hard roept: "ik weet het!"). Zelf het bestellen van pizza's kan een informatielek bewerkstelligen. In deze lezing wordt ingegaan op covert channels en informatielekkage. Wanneer treedt het op, hoe gevaarlijk is het en wat doe je er tegen? Walter Belgers is, behalve oud-penningmeester van GEWIS, mede-eigenaar van het bedrijf Madison Gurkha, dat zich bezig houdt met technische IT-beveiliging. Denk hierbij aan 'hacktests' van applicaties, systemen en netwerken maar ook het opleiden van programmeurs in veilig programmeren en social engineering, het binnenwandelen bij een bedrijf zonder afspraak.

For the demonstration part, a recent TUE university project will be used. Continue readingDatacenterconsolidatie binnen het Rijk draait om het terugbrengen van een veelheid aan verouderde en inefficiënte datacenters en computerruimten naar één of een beperkt aantal moderne, groene datacenters. Dit lijkt op het eerste gezicht een technisch vraagstuk en niet veel meer dan een IT-verhuizing. Niets is echter minder waar. Organisaties worstelen met vragen als: hoe betrekken we de proceseigenaren bij het nemen van onderbouwde besluiten? Kennen we onze IT-infrastructuur voldoende om dit planmatig en beheerst uit te voeren? Kan de bedrijfsvoering van mijn departement door blijven gaan? Hoe beperk ik risico's op verstoringen tijdens de migratie? Hoe groot moet het nieuwe datacenterzijn om klaar te zijn voor de toekomst? Of moeten we gewoon naar de cloud? Wat zijn de investeringskosten en de te verwachten besparingen van een datacenterconsolidatietraject?Kortom, het is niet eenvoudig te onderbouwen dat de voordelen van datacenterconsolidatieopwegen tegen de kosten en risico's. Geïnspireerd door onze ervaringen in diverse adviesopdrachten voor zowel publieke als private klanten zullen wij in dit artikel ingaan op de uitdagingen van datacenterconsolidatie en welke belemmeringen hierbij overwonnen moeten worden.

Continue reading29 Maart is er weer een lunchlezing, ditmaal van het BCE in samenwerking met Niels Keurentje van Omines.
De Technische Universiteit Eindhoven en de Universiteit van Tilburg stimuleren innovatief, slim en creatief denken en handelen. Jonge mensen steken hun tijd en energie in plannen waarin ze geloven. Echter, de weg naar een succesvol bedrijf blijkt vaak lang en zwaar. Om ondernemersvaardigheden bij studenten en medewerkers te stimuleren, hebben de twee Brabantse universiteiten een samenwerking opgestart, het Brabant Center of Entrepreneurship (BCE).
Het BCE bevordert het ondernemerschap binnen het Brabants academisch onderwijs. Binnen het center ontwikkelen universitaire studenten en medewerkers zich tot ondernemende professionals. Doel is om studenten en medewerkers klaar te stomen voor het ondernemersvak, zodat zij met een creatieve en vooruitstrevende blik de (internationale) markt kunnen veroveren.
Niels Keurentjes is 12 jaar professioneel werkzaam in IT, na jarenlang programmeren in het hobbycircuit. Begonnen als trainee in het dotcomtijdperk heeft hij diverse functies, van projectmanagement en R&D-manager tot lead developer en softwarearchitect, vervuld bij bedrijven als Nedcar en Philips Semiconductors. In 2006 heeft hij Omines opgericht, waar inmiddels 7 man werkzaam zijn op Eindhoven Airport.

Hierin proberen wij een tiental bedrijven te laten zien, waar je een studiegerelateerde bijbaan zou kunnen vinden. Naast dat je kennis kunt maken met deze bedrijven voor een bijbaantje kun je ook rustig met ze praten onder het genot van een biertje en een hapje over koetjes en kalfjes. De markt wordt afgesloten met een gezellige borrel.

Continue readingFebruary 1st, we will organize the B.O.O.M. Geo Cache. This activity is about making a winterly walk through a forest in the neighbourhood, but with a twist! Instead of having a clear root, you will receive coordinates for the next destination. Once arrived, you have to solve some sort of puzzle in order to receive the next set of coordinates. This is otherwise known as GeoCaching and makes a walk in winter wonderland extra special!

Continue readingIn many applications data is generated at such a fast pace that storing the data is no longer desirable or is even impossible. Typical examples of such streams of data include Internet traffic data and continuous sensor readings. Nevertheless, often there is a need for analyzing these streams. In many cases it is even necessary to report the analysis results immediately. Think, for example, of a network being monitored for unusual traffic loads in order to detect network attacks; any approach that does not immediately report suspicious patterns is simply useless. Traditional data mining approaches are not suitable for mining such streams, because they assume static data stored in a database. At first sight, the situation seems hopeless; simple tasks such as counting the number of distinct items in a stream or identifying the most frequent items already becomes impossible. In my presentation I will show that the situation is not that bad after all. I will survey three surprisingly elegant and simple algorithms for answering important queries over streaming data.

Op maandag 13 september is er om 16.30u bij GEWIS een diesborrel en nodigen wij iedereen uit om gezellig met ons een biertje te drinken. Tevens is er dan de mogelijkheid om ons te feliciteren.

Dinsdag is er de mogelijkheid om mee te BBQ'en voor €5,-. Mocht je dit nu al weten, kun je dit naar intro10@gewis.nl mailen, dan kunnen we hier rekening mee houden met de inkopen.
Woensdag is de kroegentocht weer terug in het programma, waarbij je ons gezelschap kunt houden.
Donderdag is er geen Bunkerfestival meer, maar is er 'Das Party' op het TU/e terrein, wat voor iedereen toegankelijk is.
Hopelijk zien we je tijdens een van deze dingen!
