Continue readingZit je net weer in een saai college, kijkend naar een schijnende zon en een langskabbelende Dommel, en kijk je met veel verlangen uit naar een tijd waarin je lekker buiten bezig kunt zijn? Dan zullen je gedachten misschien al zijn afgedwaald naar het prachtige B.O.O.M. Actief Buitenlands Weekend! Dat is zeker niet onterecht, want wat is er nu beter dan de combinatie van buiten bezig zijn en al graslammend (of streamend) een biertje drinken? Nu wil het toeval dat er weer zo'n weekend in de planning staat!
Tijdens het Pinksterweekend (van vrijdagavond 6 juni tot en met maandag 9 juni) zullen we afreizen naar Luxemburg om daar een puik weekend tegemoet te gaan. Op de planning staan onder andere een B.O.O.M.toppenparcours, kajakken, een dropping en uiteraard het drinken van pilsjes (of fris) op het gras of in het water. Zoals bij alle mooie activiteiten geldt: bijzijn is meemaken. Voor €70,- (100 voor niet leden en afgestudeerde) wordt dit alles je aangeboden, inclusief maaltijden en vervoer naar het zuiden. Schrijf je daarom voor 3 april in en hou het weekend vrij in je agenda!

Op woensdag 21 mei organiseert dispuut ATHENA een cocktail workshop! Dit zal de eerste activiteit zijn die georganiseerd wordt door ATHENA na haar oprichting. Voor €7,50 zul je tijdens de workshop 4 verschillende heerlijke cocktails leren maken. Natuurlijk hebben we ook voor een deskundige jury gezorgd. Deze jury zal haar oordeel vellen over de cocktail die je samen met de rest van je groepje maakt. Uiteraard mag je jouw eigen creatie zelf opdrinken. Het is niet nodig van tevoren groepjes te vormen; dit gebeurt op de avond zelf. Verder is het mogelijk om je tot dinsdag 20 mei 12:00 uur in te schrijven. Er kunnen 42 mensen meedoen, dus schrijf je snel in! (Let wel, inschrijven = betalen!)

Continue readingOp vrijdag 16 mei 2014 zal de tiende Landelijke Interuniversitaire Mathematische Olympiade (LIMO) plaatsvinden. Dit jaarlijks terugkomend evenement zal dit jaar georganiseerd worden door GEWIS.
Gedurende een drie uur durende wiskundewedstrijd zal je in een team van 4 wiskundige, proberen een uiteenlopende verzameling wiskundige problemen zo goed mogelijk op te lossen. Deze opgaven komen uit allerlei takken van de wiskunde, waaronder meetkunde, algebra, analyse, verzamelingenleer en logica, en vereisen vooral abstractievermogen en wiskundig inzicht.
Maar de LIMO is niet alleen een wiskundewedstrijd. Het is een hele verzorgde dag. Inclusief lunch, borrel en avondeten.
Deze mooie wedstrijd vind plaats op vrijdag 16 mei. Dus schrijf je allemaal in.

The Batavierenrace is a relay race between Nijmegen and Enschede (two Dutch cities) in which teams of 25 students participate. Some of these students want to run a personal record, others want to party a lot. It does not matter if you are not that sportsmanlike, it is all about having fun in this event!

Continue readingAfter our succesful fifth LAN last year, time is near for our sixth LAN. The idea is a the same as last year: everybody's welcome on friday from 19:00, but we can only enter the main room at 23:00. Before that, we will watch a movie, play on consoles, or something alike. Note that we will not provide dinner on Friday afternoon. Each person gets to use one table, chair, power and network access. You'll also be able to sleep in a separate room. Be sure to bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and something soft to lie on. On Sunday at 15:00 everybody will have to go home, unfortunatly.
Due to the amount of space available, we're limited to 46 people, so sign up now!

Continue readingTrifork is an international software development organization with about 250 employees in 9 countries. Our core principles are open source and agile. Recently, we've opened up a new office in Eindhoven.
During the lunch meeting, we will (very briefly) introduce Trifork, and then proceed with an introduction to an architectural principle called Command and Query Responsibility Segregation (CQRS).
Many web applications nowadays are built using the same architectural principles: a layered architecture and, more often than not, an anaemic domain model. Although this style is familiar to many developers and easy to set up, it lacks the capability to help us cope with increasing complexity and doesn't allow applications to scale very well. CQRS is a compelling alternative, strongly related to DDD, that promotes the decoupling of components that change an application's state (the commands) from the components that provide information about the current state (the queries). This architectural approach makes it easier to handle increasing complexity and ensure the application's ability to scale.
You will also see how CQRS can help build high performance applications and provide business value by storing valuable information about the application's history. During the session, we will also cover the practical aspects and look at what it takes to build a CQRS based application in Java. We will see how the Axon Framework can help Java developers to quickly set up a CQRS infrastructure.

We will leave for the ice rink around 7:30PM. Around 5.30PM; there will be food at GEWIS for max 6 euros.Entrance fee is 3 euros, or just 25 cents for sports card owners. Skate rental is 4 euros and is paid in addition to the entrance fee.See you there!

Continue readingDe ESSF Van Lint Studentensportweek (LSSW) wordt jaarlijks in de week voor de kerstvakantie gehouden op het studentensportcentrum van Eindhoven en is vernoemd naar wijlen prof. dr. Van Lint, voormalig hoofd van de sectie Sport en een fervent voorvechter van de studentensport in Eindhoven. In deze week worden vele verschillende (indoor)sporten beoefend, zoals zaalvoetbal en volleybal, maar ook de wat minder gangbare sporten, zoals knotsbal en uni-hockey. Dit alles in combinatie met iedere avond een gezellig feest in de kantine van het studentensportcentrum.

Zoals allicht bekend is bij u, wordt er elke derde donderdag van de maand november een speciale, jonge wijn op de markt gepresenteerd. Deze wijn is bekend onder de naam Beaujolais Primeur.
Om dit heugelijke feit te vieren, zullen de BAC en het Dispuut “In Vino Veritas†op donderdag 21 november gezamenlijk de borrel verzorgen. Zo zal de BAC zich bezighouden met het schenken van diverse soorten gerstenat en andere, non-alcoholische dranken, terwijl I.V.V zich bezigt met het verzorgen van wijn voor geïnteresseerden.
De Beaujolais Primeur is een zeer toegankelijke wijn die vaak goed in de smaak valt, ook bij mensen die nooit ofwel niet zo vaak wijn drinken. Dit wordt vaak gedankt aan de minder gebruikelijke manier van produceren.
Wij hopen u dan ook allen te zien tijdens deze borrel.

Continue readingEmile Aarts (1955) is in 1979 met lof afgestudeerd in de Natuurkunde aande Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen. In 1983 heeft hij zijn promotiewerk aanhet Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut van de Rijksuniversiteit Groningensuccesvol afgerond. Van 1983 tot 2012 is hij verbonden geweest aan hetPhilips Natuurkundig Laboratorium in Eindhoven waar hij verschillendeonderzoeks- en managementfuncties heeft bekleed. Daarnaast had hij van1990 tot 2012 een leerstoel als deeltijdhoogleraar aan de TU/e; van 1990tot 2007 bij de faculteit Wiskunde en Informatica en van 2007 tot 2012 bijde faculteit Industrial Design. Sinds 1 mei 2012 is hij voltijdhoogleraarDesign for Ambient Intelligence en sinds 1 april 2013 decaan van de faculteitWiskunde en Informatica. Daarnaast is hij wetenschappelijk directeurvan het Intelligent Lighting Instituut van de TU/e. Gedurende zijn actieveloopbaan heeft hij verschillende bestuurlijke functies bekleed bij onderzoeks-en overheidsorganisaties. Momenteel is hij betrokken bij hetRathenau Instituut, de Stichting Toekomstbeeld der Techniek, De Raadvoor de Creatieve Industrie en het Joint European Program AmbientAssisted Living.Over de intreeredeDe titel van de rede ‘Always-on’ verwijst naar een toestand waarin gebruikerspermanent interactie met computers hebben. Computers zijn zodanigklein en krachtig geworden dat ze geïntegreerd kunnen worden in onzedagelijkse leefomgeving. Deze ‘ingebedde’ computers hebben sensorenwaarmee gegevens geregistreerd worden. Al deze datastromen bevatteninformatie om de mens te dienen en het stelt de wetenschap, de wiskundeen de informatica in het bijzonder, voor de uitdaging om demethoden en technieken te ontwikkelen die de grote datastromen omzettenin waardevolle informatie. We spreken in dit verband zelfs overeen nieuw wetenschapsgebied dat Data Science wordt genoemd endat het kennisdomein zal worden van een nieuwe beroepsgroep:de Data-Scientist. In de intreerede zullen de implicaties van dezenieuwe spannende ontwikkelingen uitvoerig aan de orde komen.Namens het College van Bestuur van de TU/e nodig ik u uit tothet bijwonen van de intreerede van prof.dr. Continue readingTo start of the festivities, GEPWNAGE will organise a borrel on monday where you can congratulate the members of GEPWNAGE. This borrel will take place on monday the 11th of november and will start at 16:30 at GEWIS.
Because GEPWNAGE and beer are inseparable, a lot of different beers will be offered during the borrel. Every member of GEPWNAGE has thought of his/her favourite drink. These drinks have been bought and they will be sold during this evening!

Continue readingHet zal voor velen van u als een schok komen, maar het gaat nu toch echt gebeuren: er komt een afstudeerpresentatie aan van ondergetekende. U bent hierbij - samen met uw vriend/vriendin/man/vrouw/moeder/vader/kennissen die deze activiteit mogelijkerwijs niet hebben gezien - van harte welkom.
Het gaat plaatsvinden in de Dorgelozaal (die bevindt zich in het Traverse-gebouw) op dinsdag 2 juli aanstaande om half 2 in de middag. Ik kan u momenteel nog geen garanties geven over de voertaal van mijn presentatie, maar wél kan ik u garanderen dat u mijn presentatie getiteld 'Upscaling of processes involving rough boundaries' in ieder geval voor een aanzienlijk deel zou moeten kunnen volgen.
Na afloop van mijn presentatie bent u eveneens uitgenodigd om op mijn kosten enkele consumpties tot u te nemen bij GEWIS, terwijl mijn afstudeercommissie mij in een kamertje met allerlei wapentuig te lijf probeert te gaan. Mocht u mijn presentatie niet bij kunnen of willen wonen, bent u overigens nog altijd uitgenodigd om iets te komen drinken.
Vanwege mogelijk massale interesse in dit evenement is het handig jezelf in te schrijven, zodat ik eventueel kan verkassen naar de Blauwe Zaal als de Dorgelozaal te klein dreigt te zijn. Dit om Project-X-praktijken te voorkomen.
